Wilma H. McCarty, 93, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018. She was born May 5, 1925 at Emporia, Kansas the daughter of Dewey Shelton and Mabel Smith Shelton. Wilma was raised in Topeka. She lived in the Oakland neighborhood for many years and later at her home in Highland Park. Wilma worked several places during her career, including, Woolworth’s, the Supply Depot at Forbes Field, Stanley Home Goods, and at Highland Park High School. She was a great stay at home mom while her kids where growing up. She was an avid sewer. She will be remembered for her delicious cinnamon rolls. Wilma enjoyed watching the Golden Girls and the Young and the Restless. A favorite memory was listening to records on her record player. She enjoyed fishing at Lake Shawnee, was a 50 year member of Helena Chapter #210 OES. She had been a member of Seaman Baptist Church.
She was married to Daniel McCarty on December 25, 1941 at the Baptist Church in Oakland. Dan passed away on January 29, 2008.
She is survived by her children; Elizabeth Ann McCarty, Carol Pargman, Daniel E. McCarty and Wilbur McCarty all of the Topeka area. Eleven grandchildren and several great great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her son Ronald Lee McCarty on July 12, 1965 and a great-grandson.
Cremation is planned, graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Prairie Home Cemetery in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice.
