Wilma A. Lake

January 21, 1957 — May 22, 2022

Wilma A. Lake, 65, of Topeka passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022.   She was born January 21, 1957 in Topeka the daughter of John Degan, Jr. and Luella Mae McMahon Degan.   Wilma attended Topeka Public Schools and then obtained her G.E.D.   She met her husband Frank Lake on June 14, 1976.  They were married later that summer on August 28, 1976.   Frank survives at their Topeka home.

Wilma and Frank were foster parents for 12 years, providing love and so much more for several children in need.  They then decided they wanted to adopt children to call their very own. They adopted five amazing children: son Joseph Lake, Sr., daughter Nicole Lake, daughter Octaveu Lake, their baby boy Zach Lake, daughter Lavaya Lake, and two brothers they took in as their own, Roy and Marquis Manns. When the children became of school age, Wilma then worked as a para at Sheldon Headstart for many years, then later at Chase Middle School as well.  Wilma retired and took on more of her hobbies in knitting, sewing and spending most of her time with her grandchildren.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents John and Luella Degan; her sister, Rose Marie Alcala; brothers, John Degan, Jr. and James Fisk; her niece Janet Degan, her son Roy Manns, and her grandson, Marquis Manns, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Frank Lake; her sisters, Pearl Hinton, Carolyn Dodds, Lillian Degan; her brother, Walter Degan; her sons, Joseph and Zach Lake, Marquis Manns; daughters Nicole, Lavaya and Tavi, all of Topeka, Kansas.  She also leaves her memories for her host of grandchildren to cherish, several in Topeka, Kansas City, and Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Davidson Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.   The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the funeral service hour at the funeral home.   Interment will follow the funeral at Rochester Cemetery.
