William “Bill” C. Woodie, age 86, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2021 in Topeka. Bill was born December 7, 1935 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, the son of Virgil and Etta (Taylor) Woodie. After graduating from high school, Bill enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force and served for over 22 years, part of that time in Vietnam as a mechanic. He then worked as a civil servant at Ft. Rucker in Alabama. Bill married Carol Bingham in 1957. She preceded him in death in October of 1973. He attended the Topeka Baptist Church. Bill was a longtime member of the VFW Post #400 and the Philip Billard American Legion Post #1650, both in Topeka.
Bill was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Sue Rigdon on March 18, 2017 and a brother, Eldon Woodie. Bill is survived by a son, Vernest Woodie of Topeka; a brother, Virgil Woodie of Clifton, VA; two sisters, Jane Grube of Charleston, SC and Christine Moffat of Phoenix, AZ; and three grandchildren, Ben and Billy Rigdon and Amanda Gorman; and a great grandson, Isaiah Bonjour.
Due to the cold weather, services will be Friday, January 7, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, then going to Prairie Home Cemetery for burial. He will lie in state Thursday from noon – 8:00 p.m. with a visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission and left in care of the Davidson Funeral Home. davidsonfuneral.com
