SILVER LAKE -- William D. Predmore, 76, Silver Lake, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at a Topeka hospice house.
Mr. Predmore worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 38 years before retiring in May 1987 as director of engineering and design.

He was born June 8, 1926, in Frankfort, to Carl and Reeta Camp Predmore. He graduated from Concordia High School in 1943 and earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Kansas State University in 1949.

Mr. Predmore was a life member of the KSU Alumni Association, and he held a PE designation with the National Society of Professional Engineers, Topeka Chapter, and the Kansas Board of Technical Professions as a Professional Engineer No. 1969.

Mr. Predmore was a volunteer at the Silver Lake Elementary School, the Silver Lake Public Library, Kansas State Historical Society and the Shawnee County of Solid Waste Commission. He and his wife portrayed Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus for the Silver Lake Public Library for several years.

Mr. Predmore was a 2002 Jefferson Award Finalist and received a certificate of excellence for commitment to education and literacy. He received the 1999 Friends of NEA award in Silver Lake, and he was a recipient of the Brighten Your Corner Award from Keep America Beautiful, Topeka and Shawnee County.

Mr. Predmore also was Boy Scout commissioner for the Silver Lake-Rossville area for several years.

He was a member of the NEK Library Board, the Silver Lake Public Library Board, the Silver Lake Lions Club, Silver Lake American Legion Post No. 1 60, the XYZ Club of Silver Lake, Kansas State Historical Society, a National Wildlife Federation certified Guardian of the Wild and he was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

He married Marian C. Hart on Oct. 18, 1947, in Junction City. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Richard L. Predmore, Wichita; two brothers, Duane Predmore, Concordia, and Reynard Predmore, Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Lila Clark, Concordia, and Patty Ouellette, Clyde; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Predmore was preceded in death by a son, Robert C. Predmore, on May 5, 1991.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Burial of cremains will be private.
