William L. Carson

September 22, 1930 — June 11, 2023

William Lawrence "Bill" Carson, 92, of Newton, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2023 at the Kansas Christian Home.

Bill was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on September 22, 1930 to Harmon Edward and Maryetta Perkins Carson. He attended school in Fort Scott and graduated from high school in Gravette, Arkansas in 1948.

Bill worked 13 years at Western Union Telegraph Company in Topeka and Rolla, Missouri from 1948 to 1961.
While still working at Western Union, Bill took a military furlough and served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955 on ships on the East coast and 18 months at a base in French Morocco that was captured from the German Navy during World War II.
After, Bill worked 27 years for the Santa Fe Railroad Communication department from 1963 to 1990. For a short time, Bill also served a temporary position at the Shawnee County election office for 11 years to 2001.

A few days after leaving the Navy in 1955 he met Marilyn Joyce Brown in Topeka. On March 30, 1956 they were married. In February of 1957, a daughter Sherri Lynn was born. Bill and Marilyn lived most of their lives in Topeka, Kansas. They moved from the house Bill built in the 1960's to a home in Topeka in 2008. After Marilyn's passing in August of 2019, he moved to Newton, Kansas to be closer to his daughter.

He taught himself to paint after he retired. First by watching Bob Ross and later by watching other artists. For 35 years, he has painted a "snow scene" each winter. Each, was turned into their annual Christmas card.

Bill is survived by his daughter Sherri Wullenschneider (Timothy); granddaughter, Bethany Alspaw (Michael), their three children, Preston, Violet, and Lily; Emily Wullenscheider (Tyler) and their daughter Esther; brother, Joseph Carson; numerous nieces and nephews, most of which live in Iowa.
