OBITUARY: Wilbur E. "Gene" McRoberts
Wilbur Eugene "Gene" McRoberts, 74, Silver Lake, died Mon., Sept. 1, 2008, at Rossville Valley Manor. He was born March 7, 1934, in Shawnee County, the son of Pearl and Joshua McRoberts. He went to school at Forest Bluff Grade School and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1951.
Gene served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1956. He retired from Kaw Valley Electric on March 1, 1996. He was a member of the Silver Lake United Methodist Church, Lake Lodge # 50 AF & AM (Past Master), Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies (life member), Jimmie Lillard Post # 31 of the American Legion, and Silver Lake Lions Club (charter member). Gene served on the Grove Township Board for 18 years.
He was united in marriage with Vada Hope George on Nov. 1, 1952, in Topeka. They have one daughter, Jeanette Catron.
Gene is survived by his wife: Vada of the home; daughter: Jeanette (Keith) Catron; grandchildren: Dustin (Angela) Dick, Melissa (Courtney) Horgan and Derek (Kimberlee) Dick; a step-granddaughter: Erin (Trent) Kraus; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Thurs., Sept. 4, 2008, at the Silver Lake United Methodist Church. A U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard will conduct military honors at Walnut Hill Cemetery. Gene will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Wed., at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
