Wayne R. Newell, 80, of Topeka, KS, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Born on February 6, 1944, in Topeka, Wayne was the third son of Paul and Myrtle Newell.
He spent his entire life in Topeka, graduating from Seaman High School and continuing his education at Washburn University, where he earned a degree in Business.
Wayne's love story with Gail Keltner began with a blind date, leading to more than 50 years of marriage after their wedding on September 27, 1964. Gail preceded him in death on January 27, 2018.
Wayne proudly served in the military from April 7, 1967, to January 9, 1970, and was stationed at Fort Carson, Co, where their son Steve was born. He enjoyed a long career at North Plaza State Bank as a banker for 25 years before retiring. After retirement, Wayne found joy working for USD 345 as a bus driver. He cherished his role on the morning elementary route and enjoyed driving the equipment bus for sporting events and the Seaman High School Band. Even after he stopped driving the bus, you could still spot him in the stands at Seaman baseball games.
Wayne's passion for fishing started as a child with many family trips to Minnesota and continued into adulthood with countless hours spent fishing at Lake Perry and the lower Delaware River. He also enjoyed his Canadian fishing trips with his co-workers and friends. Fishing was just one of his many hobbies; Wayne was also a pilot, golfer, and devoted Seaman sports fan.
He is survived by his son, Steve Newell, and his wife, Heather, of Topeka; his grandson, Alex Newell, of Topeka; and his two brothers, Gerald R. Newell and his wife, Margee, of Topeka, and Donald L. Newell of Beaumont, TX.
