Wayne Fred McNorton, 88, of Topeka, Kansas passed away February 11, 2020.
He was born June 21, 1931 in Topeka, the son of Fred and Mildred (Hiller) McNorton. Wayne graduated from Seaman High School with the class of 1949.
Wayne served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 and was stationed in Korea for 18 months during the war. He was a radar technician with the first radar tracking unit of its kind, tracking incoming artillery and transmitting the information to the infantry to intercept incoming rounds.
He supported 4-H and FFA youth in many roles such as project leader, fair superintendent and judging team coach. He never missed the Shawnee County Fair and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in 4-H and FFA. He was also a lifetime member of the North Topeka Saddle Club and the Pleasant Hill Church.
Wayne loved all things sweet, especially brown bread ice cream and Grandma DeHart's coconut cream pie. He loved horses and other livestock, farming, bailing hay, tractor pulls and shows, and going to the State Fair. He enjoyed getting together with fellow Korean War veterans, spending time at the North Topeka Saddle Club, tooling leather, jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid K-State fan. Most of all Wayne loved being a dad and grandfather. Celebrating family life events, sharing stories around the table during a meal with his family, and loving his sweetheart of 70 years brought him great joy.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, Karl (Brenda) McNorton, Kendra (Rick) Stover, Cindy (Joseph) Johnson, Thomas (Lori) McNorton, Wade (Julie) McNorton, and Steve (Cara) McNorton; sister, Kathleen Nolting; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David, Boyce and Clyde McNorton; sister, RosaDell Nicholson; and grandson, Casey McNorton.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 17, 2020 at Parker-Price Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. A visitation will be the evening prior on Sunday, February 16, 2020 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
