Walt "Butch" Metzger, 64, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2013.
He was born June 10, 1948 in Topeka, the son of Don and Carrie (Peyton) Metzger. He was a 1966 graduate of Topeka High School and graduated with a BBA from Washburn University, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during Vietnam earning the Bronze Star Medal.
Walt worked for Bartlett &West Consulting Engineers and Fleming Construction Services. He later owned and operated Metzco Equipment Company as a Supermarket Designer, retiring in 1999.
He was a member of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 604 and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Walt married Wanda Wilson on April 27, 1968 in Topeka. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Kristen (Darrin Marr) Hren and Jessica (Aaron) Cheney; 5 grandchildren, Brandon, Lauren, Adilynn, Nora and Peyton; and 4 siblings, Darlene Maley, JoAnn Franks, Donna Brandenburgh and Sue Bigham, all of Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dean Metzger and two sisters, Mary Paxton and Margie Erickson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Monday, January 14, 2013 at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, 2014 NW 46th St, Topeka, KS 66618. Interment with military honors will follow at the Prairie Home Cemetery, Topeka. Walt will lie in state after 3 p.m., Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS, where a Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. The family will receive friends following the Rosary until 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 604, PO Box 750322, Topeka, KS. 66675-0322.
