Virgil M. Sewell, 98, Topeka, Kansas passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2019 in Topeka, Kansas. He was born in Wallace, Missouri on October 12, 1920 to James and Louida (Trotter) Sewell.
Virgil was a US Army veteran serving during World War II in the 2nd Infantry Divison. He landed in Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, then to St. Lo, Brest, Paris and up to Ardennes Forest (Battle of the Bulge). He was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. He liberated concentration camps and on VE Day was in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia.
Virgil was employed with Santa Fe Railroad, retiring on June 1, 1973.
He was a member of Central Park Christian Church, 50 year member of Golden Rule Lodge #90 A.F. & A.M., American Legion Post 400 and Papan's Senior Center.
Virgil married Merle G. Spangler on September 26, 1946 in Topeka, Kansas. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2005. On May 20, 2006, he married Lois M. Jackson, she preceded him in death February 2, 2019. He was also preceded in death by one brother, James Alvis Sewell, Jr. and two sisters, Reba Kissick and Pauline Hay.
Survivors include his daughter, Jane Robertson and her husband, Paul; grandson, Ryan Robertson and his wife, Angela, two great grandchildren, Turner Robertson and Arianna Robertson and four nephews. Also surviving are three step-daughters, Betty Domer and her husband, Gary; Murel Brandenburgh and her husband, Steve and Mabel Penn and her husband, Larry; six step-grandchildren, Larry Penn, Jr., Shawn Alexander, Michelle Mozes, David Alexander, Kristy Richards and Tommy Guffey and numerous step-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene, 3501 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka, with funeral services to follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
