Virgil D. Miller, 79, passed away in Topeka, KS on February 20, 2022.
He was born in Junction City, Kansas on June 30, 1942 to Virgil Miller and Betty D. Brown. He attended Junction City schools and graduated in 1960.
He grew up with a love of baseball and played all his life. Never one to run fast, he always said he didn't need to if he hit it hard enough. His best position was a pitcher. That loved carried into his adult life starting in 1966 as a coach of Little League. He coached at Arlanza Little League from 1970 until 1979. He was elected President. He remained in that position until 1979 when he relocated to Topeka and joined Kin Berry baseball coaching in the Metro Division. He also served on the Ken Berry Board of Directors.
Virgil met Katharine "Kitty" Norman in 1960 in high school. They married in 1962. After high school he attended telegraphy school in Pueblo, Colorado. Upon graduation he went to work for the Santa Fe Railway on the Middle Division. He transferred to the Western Division in California in 1965 until being transferred to Topeka, Kansas to work in the accounting department. He retired in 2002 with 40 years of service.
After retiring he took up his real love of videography. He videoed many weddings in and around the area. He also videoed services at his church and provided those videos to shut-ins and nursing homes in Topeka. When one of his grandsons, Justin, started playing basketball at Highland Park High School, he started videoing the games there, even traveling with the team. He videoed until 2020 and assisted many athletes in recruiting videos, helping them receive scholarships.
Virgil is survived by his loving wife, Katharine "Kitty"; son, Michael Dean Miller; Grandchildren, David (Kayla Speck) Miller, Eric (Rebecca) Miller, Justin (Jerilyn Barranco) Miller, Matthew (Chris Doty) Miller, Blake Miller, and Samantha Miller; Great Grandchildren, Jaycee, Dawson, and Annalise; nieces, Vicki (Pete) Forteza and Brenda (Darrell) Deasee; daughters-in-law, Angela Miller-Smith and Leslie Humpert; brothers-in-law, Robert Horne and Daniel (Dotty) Horne.
