Virgil Hilderbrand
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Parker-Price Mortuary for Virgil Milburn "Chief" Hilderbrand, 82, Topeka, who died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, shortly after arrival at a Topeka hospital.
He was born April 10, 1920, in Estella, Okla., to Ezra and Rebecca Rogers Hilderbrand. He moved to Topeka in 1947 to work at Winter General Hospital. He retired after 32 years of government service.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army from Jan. 31, 1942, to Oct. 25, 1945. He served in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. He had the rank of technician fourth grade when he was discharged.
He had attended Seaman Baptist Church and was a former member of Post No. 142 of the American Legion in Perry. He served as president of the North Topeka West Neighborhood Improvement Association and as chairman of the board of directors of the Senior Center at Pappan's Landing.
He was a former chairman of the Silver Haired Legislature. He had coached and mentored Little League Baseball teams in North Topeka. He played semi-professional baseball before World War II.
He married Ruth Bennett on Aug. 4, 1946, in Parsons. They owned and operated Chief and Ruth's Cafe in the 300 block of S. Kansas. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Virgil R. Hilderbrand, Russellville, Ark., and David A. Hilderbrand, Topeka; a daughter, Janine S. Gray, Topeka; a brother, Tom White, Vinita, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A Fort Riley detail will conduct graveside services at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Hilderbrand will lie in state after 1 p.m. today at the mortuary, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m.
