OBITUARY: Virgil Dean Adkins

Virgil Dean Adkins, 79, of Carbondale died Sat., March 19, 2005 at his home. He was born Nov. 18, 1925 in Topeka, KS to Charles Edward and Vesta I. (Shepard) Adkins.

He served in the U.S. Navy aboard 2 ships during W.W. II. He was a member of Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion and V.F.W. Post # 1125 of Carbondale.
Virgil was a member of Golden Rule Lodge # 90, A.F. & A.M.; Lawrence Scottish Rite Bodies; Arab Shrine Temple and Twin Lakes Shrine Club..

As a young man he owned and drove trucks. Virgil later became a boiler operator for the government and retired from Colmery-O'Neil V.A.M.C. in April, 1992.

Virgil married Mary Ann Mayfield on June 18, 1968. She survives of the home, Carbondale.

Surviving in addition to his wife are 4 daughters: Charleen Sorrels of Carbondale, Virdeana (Suzie) Brown of Ozark, AR, Marlene Jordan of Eugene, OR, and Frances Baker of Topeka; other children that he helped to raise: Jack Mayfield of Scranton, Connie Miller of Topeka, Barbara Murray of Havana, KS; a brother: Harold Adkins of Scranton; 3 sisters: Verla Morris of Carlsbad, NM, Ethel Wilson of Clarksville, TN, and Charlene Duncan of Phillipsburg; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Barry Dean, and a granddaughter, Dena Nottestad and 5 brothers.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Tues., March 22, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence followed by Masonic services conducted by Golden Rule Lodge # 90, A.F. & A.M. A Fort Riley U.S. Army Detail will conduct military honors at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Richland. Virgil will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
