Violet Mae Shumway, 85, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2006 at her home.
Violet was born June 11, 1921 in Velica, Iowa the daughter of Ernest and Elsie Viola Barnes Bearde.
Violet married Claude B. Shumway October 12, 1942 in Lyndon, KS. He preceded her in death December 13, 1973. She was also preceded in death by her grandson Jason Scott Womack September 13, 1993, two sisters, Faye Bearde and Virginia Degand and one brother, Ivan L. Bearde. Survivors include her children, Carol A. Bittinger (Shumway) White Sulphur Springs, W. Va; Judy R. Womack (Shumway), Jacksonville, AR; Shirley K. McClintock (Shumway) and her husband Larry, Shermansdale, PA; Frank L. Shumway, Renne R. Shumway and his wife Rhonda, Russell L. Shumway, Joy S. Shumway and her husband Charlie W. Porubsky, Jr., all of Topeka; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Violet and Claude owned and operated Shumway Bait and Tackle in Topeka from 1962-1973.
She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #58, Oakland Rebekah Lodge, Auxiliary to North Post #400 American Legion, and Army Mothers.
Funeral services will be held 11:00am, Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue. Burial will follow at Rochester Cemetery. Mrs. Shumway will lie in state after 1:00p.m.Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.
