Veronica Jovita (Mercier) Jones, 86, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2014.
She was born January 13, 1928, in Greenleaf, Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Gray) Mercier. She was a graduate of Greenleaf High School, Greenleaf, KS and received a Teaching Certificate from Kansas State University.
Veronica was a salesperson for Christmas Around The World and retired from the Kansas Department of Revenue. After retirement she worked at various grocery stores in Topeka as a food demonstration consultant.
She was a member of the Greenleaf VFW Women's Auxiliary.
Veronica married Stanley Hewitt in 1948. They divorced. She later married Arthur Jones in December of 1964 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on October 29, 1996. Survivors include five children, Charlene (Dennis) Link, Hoyt, KS, Alan (Diana) Hewitt, Topeka, Lynn (Ursula) Hewitt, Topeka, Larry (Cassie Shikles) Hewitt, Springfield, MO, and Suzanne (Michael) Smith, Peoria IL; 21 grandchildren, Shawn (Jill) Link, Lacey Link, Heather Link, Blaine (Audra) Link, Brad Hewitt, Cindi (Ted) Valdivia, Lucas Hewitt, Kelli (Sam) Hernandez, Corey (Autumn) McLaughlin, Ryan McLaughlin, Gerald (Parrish) McLaughlin, Michal (John) Hawkins, Jared (Cecilia) Hewitt, Justin (Allison) Hewitt, Jessica (Kyle) Zimmerman, LeAnna (Willie Hulet) Hewitt, Lane (Anna) Hewitt, Lola Shikles, Kristin (Andrew) Fouts, Kylie Smith and Karsen Smith; 49 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Ruby Mercier, Bernice Cox and Betty Estes and two brothers, Lawrence and Kenneth Mercier.
Veronica enjoyed cooking, quilting, sewing, bingo, going to the casino and family gatherings.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m., at the Brick Cemetery, Holton, KS. Veronica will lie in state after 3 p.m., Friday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.
