Vernon Thompson
Vernon Willard Thompson, 87, Topeka, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.
He was born Nov. 2, 1915, in Topeka, to Clarence Willard and Gertrude Marie Kerle Thompson. He spent his early life in Topeka, where he attended public schools. He worked for Santa Fe Railway for 40 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. He was an ambulance driver for Company A in the 120th Medical Battalion in the 103rd Division and served in France, Germany and Austria. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal, European-African-Middle Eastern medal with three battle stars, Combat Medical badge, American Theater ribbon, World War II Victory medal and Good Conduct medal.
He married Anna Rosie Borovicka on Jan. 23, 1943, in Alexandria, La. She died Sept. 28, 1996.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Thompson, Topeka; a sister, Lola Boydston, Topeka; and two grandchildren.
A Fort Riley detail will conduct graveside services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Thompson will lie in state after 3 p.m. Wednesday at Parker-Price Mortuary.
