Vernon W. Henderson, 92, of Topeka, passed away Friday, January 15, 2016.
He was born September 27, 1923 in Parthenon, Arkansas, the son of Samuel Monroe and Martha Viola "Ola" (Jones) Henderson. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II.
Vernon was employed as a truck driver for Kansas Sand in Topeka for many years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, Topeka.
Vernon married Beulah M. Kelley on February 20, 1944 in Parthenon, AR. She survives. Other survivors include three children, Don(Linda) Henderson, Hoyt, Deborah (Jay Abney) Lynch, Topeka and Darlene (Doug) Martin, Topeka; 10 grandchildren, Dion (Monique) Henderson, Tammy (Ricky) Erickson, Keri Henderson, Dustin Henderson, Kevin (Erica) Henderson, Angela (Jake) Humpert, Chris (Holly) Lynch, Melissa Lynch, Thad (Natalie) Martin and Chad (Sasha) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Shane Henderson, Karliegh Henderson, Addison Henderson, Steven Richardson, Travis Richardson, Brooke Brennan, Kai and Zoe Yim, Andrew Henderson, Corey Humpert, Kaitlin Humpert, Dylan Martindale Lynch, Kelsie Lynch, Brandi Lynch, Emily Keck, Lucas Keck, DiSaya Lynch, Destanie Martin, Briaunna Martin, Trae Martin, Shalee and Kaden, Harper Johnson, Hagan Johnson and Hendricks Johnson; and a sister-in-law, Imogene Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David R. Henderson on September 14, 1954; two brothers, Vance and Carl Henderson; and a great-grandson, James Andrew Lynch.
Vernon enjoyed camping, boating, water skiing, fishing, woodworking and working on cars. He also enjoyed CB radios, metal detecting and Dirt Track Racing.
A graveside service will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at the Mt. Hope Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St., Topeka.
Vernon will lie in state after 3 p.m., Tuesday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.
