Verna Louise (Ellis) Hayes, 79, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Lexington Park Assisted Living.

Verna was born December 21, 1937, in Topeka, KS, to Lloyd Dale and Margarite Elva (Tipton) Ellis. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1955. She married her high school sweetheart, Rodney Hayes on December 27, 1956. Together they enjoyed traveling the world. Verna worked as a secretary in numerous positions and cared for all of her grandchildren in her later years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Ellis.

Verna is survived by her husband, Rodney Hayes; three children, Deborah (David) Hayes, David Hayes, and Brian Hayes; three grandchildren, Taylor Hayes, Justin Hayes, and Travis Anschutz-Hayes; one sister, Janet Fouts; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date at Buck's Grove Cemetery, Holton, KS.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
