Verle A. Brown

Verle A. Shelby Brown, 84, of Topeka passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023. She was born on May 24, 1939 at Manhattan, Kansas the daughter of Earl and Joy L. Ward Shelby. She moved to Topeka in 1956 and graduated from Seaman High School in 1958. Verle married John Brown on July 9, 1961 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. They enjoyed many years together travelling, going to auctions, visiting family and friends, and taking long car rides to enjoy their favorite restaurants.

She was a loving wife, sister, and aunt who enjoyed entertaining the young nieces and nephews at family gatherings.  She had a wit and orneriness about her that was still present even at the end.  Puzzles, word searches and game shows were her favorite hobbies.

Verle worked for Hallmark Cards for over 33 years. At the time of her retirement she held the position of Inspector.

Verle attended Countryside Christian Church and in recent years attended Grantville United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Helen Worthington of Topeka; brothers-in-law, Robert Brown and Kenneth Brown both of Topeka and Don Brown and Roy Brown of Grantville and several nieces, nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband John in 2014 and her brother, Burle Shelby of Topeka in 2022 and her sister, Earline Rathbun in 2019.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 pm on Friday evening, June 9 at Davidson Funeral Home.
