OBITUARY : Vera Pearl George
Vera Pearl George, 99, Topeka, formerly of Silver Lake, died Sat., June 9, 2007, at Aldersgate Village. She was born Oct. 18, 1907, at Fredonia, the daughter of James R and Iva Pearl Glass. She attended Fredonia schools and was a graduate of The College of Emporia in 1929. Vera was a teacher at Clifton High School for 5 years; a social worker for Sedgwick and Shawnee counties; and following the 1951 flood, was a social worker for the Red Cross. She later worked at Harding Glass Co. Vera also taught at Forest Bluff, one of the last one-room schoolhouses in Shawnee County. During most of her last 50 years, she was a devoted farm wife; enjoyed working and traveling with her husband, gardening, keeping books for the farm, her miniature Pomeranian, Mitzi, and all her grandchildren.
Vera was preceded in death by her husbands; Carl Entsminger and J.W. "Ted" George; a brother, Max Glass; and a sister, Dorothy Ward. She was also preceded in death by a son, William W. Leggett, on July 21, 2001.
She was a member of the Silver Lake United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and also taught four years of the Menninger Bible classes. She was a 75-year member of the Loyal Chapter #176, O.E.S., was a member of the Home Extension Unit and XYZ Club, all of Silver Lake. She and Ted were active members of the Good Sam's Club. Vera had resided at Aldersgate Village since 1998.
Surviving are a daughter: Janet Leggett Martinek, of Silver Lake; step-children: Ellen George Thompson of Silver Lake, and Betty Entsminger, Topeka; 7 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 7 step-great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 PM, Wed., June 13, 2007, at the Silver Lake United Methodist Church followed by Eastern Star Services conducted by Loyal Chapter # 176, O.E.S. Committal services will be at 11:00 AM, Thurs., June 14, 2007, at Fredonia Cemetery in Wilson
County. Vera will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Tues., at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
