Velma Marie Holaday Scritchfield
Velma Marie Holaday Scritchfield, 95, Topeka, died Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at her home, Legends. She was born October 2, 1921, at Perry, the daughter of Fielden James and Laura Mae Hoover Carder.
Velma graduated from Grinnell High School in 1940, and married Karl Gordon in 1941. They divorced in 1947. In 1950, Velma and Edmund T. Holaday were married. He preceded her in death in 1988. Velma married Tom Scritchfield in 1990. He preceded her in death in 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers: Floyd Carder and John Carder.
Velma has two children: Ralph Gordon (Patty) of Kansas City, KS, and Shirley Fischer (Donald) of Topeka; five step-grandchildren; fourteen step-great-grandchildren; and thirteen step-great-great-grandchildren.
Velma worked for Quality Oil Company in the office for 30 years. She volunteered at the V.A.; belonged to Women of the Moose, the Auxiliary at Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion, and was a member of Northland Christian Church.
She had so much fun playing cards and bingo. She will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Committal services will be at 3:00 PM, Friday, November 4, 2016, at Rochester Cemetery, 1200 NW Menninger Road, Topeka, with Reverend Larry T. Preston officiating.
Velma will lie in state from 3:00 to 8:30 PM, Thursday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka.
