Velma Lucille Higbee Sykes, 97, of Topeka passed away Thursday, August 13, 2009.
She was born July 14, 1912 in Silver Lake, KS, the daughter of Warren Seymore and Florence Louise (Catt) Higbee.
Velma married Homer Wilson Sykes, Sr. on June 7, 1941 in Lyndon, KS. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1998. Survivors include two sons, Homer W. Sykes, Jr. (Carol Marie), Topeka and Gary Lee Sykes, Gardner; two daughters, Delores Ann Sykes, Topeka and Carol L. Henning, Springfield, VA; a step-son, Morris W. Sykes, K.C., MO; 6 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Mrs. Sykes will lie in state after 3 p.m., Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 5375 SW 7th, Topeka, KS 66606.
