Truman B. Payne Jr., 93, Topeka, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in Topeka. He was born Aug. 30, 1910, in Rossville, to Truman B. and Carrie (Short) Payne Sr. He retired as assistant city auditor for the city of Topeka. He was a member of Victory Tabernacle Church. He married Lela Smith Bateman on March 8, 1931, in Grantville. She died on Oct. 8, 1998. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon A. Lambrecht and Michelle R. Haverkamp, both of Topeka; two sons, Keith E. Payne, Maple Hill, and Larry B. Payne, Topeka; a brother, Paul Payne, St. Simons Island, Ga.; 9 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabels Memorial Park Cemetery. Truman B. Payne Jr. will lie in state after 3 p.m. today at Parker-Price Mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice House, 200 S.W.
