Tomas A. Munoz

September 26, 1940 — January 27, 2025

Topeka, Kansas

Tomas A. Muñoz, 84, of Topeka passed away on January 27th, 2025, which sadly would have been he and his wife’s 62nd wedding anniversary. Tomas was born September 26th, 1940 in Silao, GTO, Mexico, the oldest of 12 children born to Tomas and Angelina Muñoz. Tomas was raised in Mexico.

He married Luz Maria on January 27th, 1963 in Silao. Tomas would raise his family in Mexico until later moving to the United States. While in Mexico, Tomas proudly worked at Coca-Cola as distributor. Tomas moved to Topeka in 1979, later bringing the rest of his family in 1980. He worked several places including Frito Lay and the Lulac Center in Oakland. He later worked in operations at the Jeffrey Energy Center first as a relief operator and then as an Auxiliary Equipment Operator until retiring. After retirement he would help his wife run Lupita’s Mexican Restaurant in Downtown Topeka.

Growing up, Tomas found his passion for music. Later in life, him and his family would put together a band, where they played together for over twenty years. The family band took part in many celebrations to include weddings, social events and quinceañeras. He also sang in the church choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for many years.

Tomas also found enjoyment in growing many fruits and vegetables in his garden at both his homes in Mexico and Topeka. Tomas was proud of his selection of pepper plants that were commonly used to make salsa at Lupita’s. Tomas was a very protective and attentive gardener to his plants, so much so, he guarded them from the ‘trespassing’ squirrels.

Tomas found joy in watching sports to include soccer, Kansas Jayhawks Basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs. Tomas was such a dedicated fan to Jayhawks Basketball, he would record the games and only watch them once he had confirmed they won, as he could not stand to watch them lose a game.

He is survived by his children, Manuel J. Muñoz and wife Cora of Topeka; daughter Marilu Muñoz and husband Jose of Topeka, Jose Martin Muñoz and wife Martha of Topeka, son, Luis Fernando Muñoz and wife Karla of Topeka, Tomas Y. Muñoz, Jr. of Hidalgo, Mexico, and Mari Carmen of El Paso, Texas; 22 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Tomas was proceeded in death by his wife and son, David Y. Muñoz.
