Susan Maria Kraus
Susan Maria Kraus, beloved wife and mother, died Monday, November 24th,2014, at Select Specialty Hospital of Topeka, surrounded by the type of love she gave so freely during her life. Susan Maria Baker was born on September 7, 1947, in Claremont, NH, the daughter of Walter and Mary (Petuck) Baker.
She attended Claremont schools, graduating in 1965.
She met her future husband, William E. Kraus, Jr., at Stevens High School in Claremont. They were married on June 16, 1968, in Claremont, NH.
Susan graduated from the Elliot Hospital School of Nursing in Manchester, NH, in May, 1968. During her life she worked in a number of hospital and clinic settings displaying the deep compassion, hope and joy that marked every area of her life.
Susan was an extremely creative person in many craft disciplines. She was an excellent cook, always trying new recipes and seldom preparing a dish the same way twice. She made the Kraus home a place where people felt welcome, accepted, and blessed. Her guests included international students from many different countries who were studying at Washburn University. Susan and Bill loved to travel both in this country and to a number of places around the world. They particularly enjoyed cruising.
Susan Kraus is survived by her husband, William, of Topeka, a daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Todd Staerkel of Topeka, a son, Steven Kraus of Overland Park, KS, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Jackie Kraus of Cornelius, NC, a nephew, Michael Kraus of Blacksburg, VA, and a niece and her husband, Meagan and Michael Donohoe of Charlottesville, VA. Susan was preceded in death by her parents and a still-born daughter, Amy.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 1, 2014, at Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene, 3501 SW Wanamaker, Topeka. Interment in Rochester Cemetery, 1200 SW Menninger Road, Topeka.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, Sunday, at the church.
