Susan Kim (Canole) Crooks, 69, of Silver Lake, passed away on November 11, 2022.
Kim was born on June 29, 1953 in Topeka, Kansas, the only child of James Clemont and Alpha LaVonne (Julian) Canole.
Kim attended public schools in Topeka and graduated from Topeka West High School in 1971.
Kim entered Washburn University during her senior year of high school and graduated Cum Laude with departmental honors earning a Bachelor of Education degree in 1975. She was also a member of the Lady Blues softball team over this period of time. While working on her degree, she worked for USD 501 Special Education and Crestview Elementary, working with children who had perceptual/motor disabilities; and at Lowman Hill during a summer session teaching physical education. After graduation she taught physical education and coached volleyball, basketball, tumbling, and track at Boswell Jr. High School and then moved to Robinson Middle School where she was the Advisor Base Coordinator and taught physical education and science. Kim sat out teaching for three years to be at home with her children and returned to teaching in the Seaman District. She taught math at Seaman High School, Northern Hills, and Logan; sponsored cheerleaders and coached track at Logan; and sponsored drill team, and became the Vice Principal and Athletic Director at Northern Hills Jr. High School for 10 years; moved to Indian Creek as Principal for 8 years, East Indianola as Principal for 4 years, and Logan as Principal for 2 years. After 34 years in education, Kim retired as Principal of Logan Elementary in May 2011.
Kim married Bill J. Crooks, Jr., March 10, 1973 and has two beautiful children, Bill and Susan.
She is survived by her husband Bill; son William "Bill" Joseph Crooks III and his wife Allison; daughter, Susan Michelle Crooks Zoeller and her husband Trent; and her five grandchildren, Zachary Zoeller, Ryker Zoeller, Brynna Zoeller, James Crooks, and Matthew Crooks.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 14, 2022, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Westside Christian Church, 432 SW Lindenwood Ave, Topeka, KS 66606, where Kim was a member since 1966, serving as Elder; participating on the church Board, Diaconate, and many committees; and playing the piano for special programs and services.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at 1:00 pm at Westside Christian Church, 432 SW Lindenwood Ave, Topeka, KS 66606.
Graveside service will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
Because of her love of animals and compassion for people, memorial contributions are suggested to Helping Hands Humane Society or to Westside Christian Church for Bells Music.
