Stephen Carl Parris, 57, a long-time resident of Topeka, died Thursday, October 9, 2008 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
Mr. Parris was born on March 18, 1951 in Iowa City, IA the son of Fred M. Parris and Patricia L. Parris. In 1954, the family moved to Topeka, where Stephen was a student at McCarter Elementary School. He moved to Manhattan with his family in 1964, where Stephen attended Luckey High School, graduating in 1969. While in high school, Stephen won the Bosch and Lomb Science Medal, the Harvard Book award, and was a 1969 recipient of a National Merit Scholarship.
Stephen attended Cornell College in Cornell, IA. Later, he moved to Topeka, where he resided for more than thirty years. Throughout his life, Mr. Parris had a special interest in chemistry.
Survivors include a brother, Frederick Parris, of Houston; a brother, David Parris and his partner, Valery Svenski, of Chicago; a sister, Rosemary Parris Bennett, and her husband, Dan Bennett of Dallas; a nephew, Adam Bennett; and a niece, Lauren Bennett. Stephen Parris was preceded in death by his mother on March 16, 2008; by his father on January 30, 1975, and by a brother, Douglas, on December 21, 1963.
Funeral services for Stephen C. Parris will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2008 at Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church, 1029 N. Kansas Avenue, Topeka. Private family burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Topeka. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church for community outreach.
