Sonja Kay Willms, free-ranging, nonfiction author, old punk rock girl, infinite being of light, working for equality, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at her home on the prairie in Rural Hoyt at the age of 47. Sonja was born August 5, 1971 in Topeka, the daughter of Ronnie and Susan (Myers) Willms. She grew up in Topeka, graduating from Topeka West High School. She attended Emporia State University. Sonja had worked at the Johnson County Developmental Support where she did art therapy. Sonja was an avid believer in protecting her rights and rights for others, for planned parenthood, Kansas Medicare and Medicaid rights. She enjoyed protesting and supporting at the Kansas Capitol grounds. She also was a member of NOW. She enjoyed selling her eggs at the Topeka Farmers Market. She enjoyed going for rides in the country, especially to Lawrence. She also enjoyed gardening, raising chickens and photography. Sonja is survived by her father, Ronnie Willms of Smyrna, Tennessee; her mother, Susan Willms of Topeka; her life partner, Gino Jones of Hoyt; two sons, Matthew Evan Willms of Hoyt and Eugene Jones of Topeka, along with several aunts, uncles and cousins. She is also survived by her pets, Bella the dog, and her two cats, Little Bit and Taffy.
A family gathering will be held Saturday, July 13, 2019 from 5-8 p.m. at the home of her mother; 2400 S.W. Seabrook Avenue, Topeka, Ks.
