Shirley Faye Casto

November 27, 1932 — February 22, 2025

Topeka

Shirley Faye Casto, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, was born on November 27, 1932, in Topeka, Kansas. After a life brimming with love, creativity, and a distinct touch of ornery spirit, she passed away peacefully in her hometown on February 22, 2025.

Shirley graduated from Topeka High School in 1974, where she began a journey that would see her become a beloved bus driver for Shawnee Heights USD 450. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her affection for the children she transported each day. Shirley had a knack for making the ordinary feel extraordinary with her lively personality, often weaving humor and warmth into her daily interactions.

Beyond her career, Shirley found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. An avid painter and craft enthusiast, she spent her time indulging in needlepoint and crochet, creating lasting pieces that brought warmth to her home and to those she loved. A true lover of games, she could frequently be found gathered around the table playing cards with family and friends, laughter echoing through the room. And, of course, her fondness for food—especially Chinese cuisine—made her family gatherings even more delightful.

Shirley’s family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her loving daughters, Paula Harper and Sonya Harper, her devoted sons, Richard (Janice) Harper, Jr. and Andrew Kuhr. Her grandchildren, Shelly (Shannon) Dudley, Miles Harper, Richard "Cole" (Michelle) Harper, and Tyler Harper, brought her endless joy. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Harper Dudley, Maya Dudley, Corbin Dudley, Owen Harper, Peyton Harper, Bryce, Hanley Harper, and Jade Harper, each of whom held a special place in her heart. She also leaves behind her first husband, Richard Harper Sr.

Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Guy Frederick, her mother, Mary (Plummer) Frederick, and her siblings: Leroy Frederick, Joyce Royer, Jane Burson, Jack Frederick, and Carol Griggs, along with her sister, Helen Kuhr. She is also reunited in spirit with her son Hans Kuhr and her beloved husband Gerald "Jerry" Casto, whom she missed dearly.

Shirley's legacy of kindness, warmth, and strong-willed spirit will forever be remembered by her family and friends. In celebrating her life, we are reminded of the love she shared and the laughter she brought into our lives. Her vibrant presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
