OBITUARY: Sherry Lynn Hilderbrand
Sherry Lynn Hilderbrand, 58, Topeka, died Mon., Jan. 28, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital. She was born Dec. 18, 1949, in Topeka, the daughter of Areila Olene (West) and Clio Wayne Oakman, Sr.
She had attended Silver Lake Elementary School and graduated from Topeka High School in 1968. She received a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse from Manhattan Area Vo-Tech School. During her career she worked at Parkview Passages, the State of Kansas, Colmery-O'Neil VAMC, and most recently at Midland Hospice. She had served as a Troop Mom for Troop # 70, BSA. She played softball in high school and throughout much of her adult life. Sherry followed the St. Louis Cardinals and college softball. Sherry was devoted to her granddaughters' softball, never missing a game or practice. She was very dedicated to her family, and greatly enjoyed cooking, camping, and sewing.
She was married to Virgil R. Hilderbrand on May 19, 1972, in Topeka. They were divorced. She was preceded in death by her sister: Shirla Hubbard Wasson; and her father.
Surviving are a daughter: Rebecca Fairbanks (Brad) of Topeka; a son: Nicholas Hilderbrand (fiancee, Shelly Burghart and her daughter Shayla) of Topeka; her mother: Areila O. Oakman of Topeka; 3 brothers: C. Wayne Oakman, Jr. (Kay) of Abilene, Larry D. Oakman (Gayle) of Grand Island, NE, and Donnie Oakman (Christine) of Topeka; 2 granddaughters: Courtney Fairbanks and Carley Fairbanks, both of Topeka; and 11 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Fri., Feb. 1, 2008, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka. Interment in Carbondale Cemetery. Sherry will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Thurs., at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
