Sandra Simmonds

Sandra Lee Simmonds, born November 18, 1945 in Topeka, KS, to Millard L and Betty Jordan Burrell; surrounded by family, she passed away peacefully on January 21, 2024.

Sandy grew up in North Topeka surrounded by friends and family.  She loved and knew her grandparents Harry and Cady Jordan well, as they lived directly across the street.

North Topeka Baptist Church was a central part of her family life.  She grew up in the church and loved teaching Sunday school and helping with weddings and church socials.

Sandy loved music and was a skilled violinist. She participated in music competitions while a member of THS Symphony Orchestra. That love continued through her life, as she played violin in Topeka Mariachi Band and at special occasions. She was also an accomplished bowler, playing in several leagues during the earlier stages of her adult life.

In 1966 Sandy and Kenneth Simmonds were married.  They had two children, Kendra and Kyle Simmonds.

Sandy loved cooking and baking, especially creating unique goodies that were delicious and loved by all.  She delighted in decorating her home for all holidays.  She also loved finding unique jewelry to wear.

Sandy spent her working career in service of others. She held positions at Capital City High School, Topeka Education Center, SRS, and retired from the Topeka Battered Women’s Task Force at the YWCA. She advocated for others at every stage of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Kendra Estep.  Survivors include her sister, Beverly (David) Jones, her son Kyle (Lisa) Simmonds, grandchildren, Jordan (Brendan) Lloyd, Nick Estep, Matt Estep, and great grandchildren.

The family will greet friends at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at the Davidson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home followed by graveside services at 12:30 p.m. in Rochester Cemetery.
