Russell L. "Bud" Palmer
Bud Palmer, 74, of Topeka, died Thursday, August 23 at Stormont-Vail Hospital. He was born August 28, 1932 in Topeka, Kansas the son of Russell F. and Leona L. Haverkamp Palmer. He lived in the Grantville area most of his early life.
Bud was an outstanding athlete at PerryHigh School where he graduated in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. He worked for Santa Fe Offices from 1950-1955. He then worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company 39 ½ years retiring in 1994. He was Division B Chairman for the Rubber Workers Union for several years.
Bud was a member of Post #400 American Legion, Topeka and the Eagles Lodge in Holton. He was an avid golfer and was a Marshall at LakeShawnee golf course. He enjoyed bowling at GageCenter and loved all car racing, especially NASCAR Nextel. Bud loved hunting with his dad and friends.
He married Donna LeGer in 1952. They were divorced. He married Gail Gay in 1992 in Las Vegas. She survives. Other survivors include his daughter Pam Besser and her husband David, Grandsons Luke and Dillon, all of Topeka, Sisters, Shirley Seel, Hot Springs, AR, Connie Fagerberg and her husband Linn, Olsburg, KS, Step Daughter, Sandra Vanatta, Lecompton, KS and Granddaughters, Shannon, Cynthia and Sarah Wise, Step Son, Brian Gay and his wife Lisa, Lawrence, KS, Grandsons, Zach and Parker and Granddaughter Talia, brother-in-law, James Burks and his wife Ann, Moulton, AL, and several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by everyone. Bud especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday. August 27, at Crestview United MethodistChurch. Mr. Palmer will lie in state after 2:00 p.m., Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker Price Chapel where the family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. that evening. Burial will be in GrantvilleCemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or to the Organization of the Donor's Choice.
