Roy Gilbert Tichenor
June 1, 1923 – August 14, 2024
Roy Gilbert Tichenor 101, a WWII veteran, of Topeka, Kansas, was promoted and reassigned from his earthly duties to his heavenly assignment by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This new deployment is for eternity.
Roy was born on June 1, 1923, at Hyannis, Nebraska, to C.R. and Elizabeth Tichenor. His family moved from Nebraska to Kansas. He graduated from Hoyt High School in 1943.
On June 18, 1943, he enlisted in the Army and served in the 407th Infantry Regiment, 102d, 3rd Battalion, HQ Company, also known as “The Ozarks”. He received the American Theater Ribbon, EAMET Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Ribbon. He received a Purple Heart for being wounded in combat during action in Germany. He received an honorable discharge on March 16, 1946.
Roy married Thelma Jean Griffith on November 24, 1948, in Topeka. They were married for 73 years, living in the same home where they lovingly raised their children and enjoyed many grandchildren.
Roy worked for Duffins Optical for several years and then was employed by Charley Kelly of Kelly Oil Company as plant manager until retirement.
Roy had a deep love and devotion to God and his family. Until the last few years, he humbly prayed each night on his knees for every family member, loved ones, and missionaries.
He tandem sky-dived at age 75. He loved playing his guitar and singing with his family and brothers. He never lost his ability to humor his family or trying to solve any of their concerns.
He is survived by a sister, Beth Quigley, children; Aneda Hanschu, Ronald “Ron” Tichenor, Sr., Gerald “Gary” Tichenor, Connie Albright, Steven “Steve” Tichenor, Tammy Smith, Florence “Flo” Tichenor, and Julia “Julie” Peralta, grandchildren; James Hanschu, Roy Hanschu, Tiffany Coolberth, Samantha Tichenor, Ron Tichenor, Jr., Monica Brown, Robert Tichenor, Corey Tichenor, Sage Tichenor, Felicha Albright, Jessica Albright, Wendy Severs, Amanda Tichenor, Zachary “Zach” Tichenor, Austin Zobel, Bailey Zobel, Nichole McCollum, and Ashley Peralta, great grandchildren; Dylan Hanschu, Cai Hanschu, Blake Wright, Lensi Hernandez, Chloe Coolberth, Emily Wiggins, Jacqueline Tichenor, Elias Tichenor, Theo Tichenor, Calista Tichenor, Landon West, Alyssa Brown, Collin Brown, Taylor Brown, Brayden Brown, Michael Brown, Kirsten Smith, Alyesa “Addie” Peoples, Levi Peoples, Ezekiel Peoples, Jazmine Hunninghake, Lorenzo Estrada, Alonzo Estrada, Kranston Haehn, Randy McCollum, Jimmy McCollum, Lydia Lehnherr, and Coltin Lehnherr.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Thelma, both his parents and siblings, Robert Lee Tichenor, Edwin Tichenor, Ruby Carter, Calvin Tichenor, Allen Tichenor, and a grandson Jeremy Severs.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Parker-Price & Davidson Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka, KS 66608.
Funeral Service will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Topeka Baptist Church, 4500 SW Gage Blvd, Topeka, KS 66610. Burial with military honors will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery in Topeka.
