Robert W. "Bob" Viergever, 90, Willard, KS, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at his home.
He was born August 1, 1929 in Willard, Kansas to Joe Honas and Gladis (Brooks) Viergever. He graduated from Rossville High School, the class of 1947. Bob joined the Marines on September 15, 1950 and was sent to Korea where he was severely wounded on April 10, 1951. He then spent 9 months in the Millington Tennessee Hospital and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on April 18, 1952 with the rank of Corporal.
He worked at Wagner Construction in Topeka as a metal lather, retiring in 1992.
Bob was a member of American Legion Post No. 31 in Rossville and Carpenter's Union in Topeka.
On March 28, 1952 he married Doris Myers in Topeka. She preceded him in death May 29, 1999. He was also preceded in death by his parents and brother, Max Viergever.
On October 5, 2001 Bob married Shirley Benedict at the Rossville Christian Church.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Shirley; children, Jan (Don) Dolezilek, Dover; Jay (Sue) Viergever, Overbrook; and Joy (Rick) Davis of Rossville; grandchildren, Haven (Eric) Byrne, Tanner (Jennie) Davis, Trace (Erin) Davis, Bethany (Dan) Ensle, Devin (Caitlyn) Viergever, Dalton (Rene) Viergever; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; step-children, Bryce (Kelly) Benedict, Topeka; Dennis (Donna) Benedict, Illinois; Linda Benedict, Silver Lake; Diana Sabatino, Texas; grandsons, Matt, Nick, Daniel, Michael, Brett and Chris; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:00 pm Monday, October 7, 2019 at Parker-Price Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Burial with military honors will follow at Rossville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the funeral home.
