Robert L. "Mitch" Mitchell was born on June 23, 1923, 100 years ago in the family home on his parent's farm where he grew up as a child.
He graduated from Seaman High School then attended Washburn University until joining the Navy in 1943 where he served as a sonar man. While in the Navy he attended Georgia Tech. After being discharged in 1946 he went to work for Martin Amusement Company as a T.V. technician. June 27, 1947, he married Virginia Lea Neeley.
In the mid 1950's Robert and Virginia purchased the Martin Amusement Company, selling and repairing T.V.'s, refrigerators, air conditioners, stereos, and other equipment. Business thrived until the 1966 tornado in Topeka destroyed it. They then continued to run the shop from a new location until he went to work for Ed Marling's and retiring from there. He then took care of the family farm. After retirement he enjoyed hunting, camping, boating, fishing, traveling in his motor home, splitting wood and tinkering with many projects in his shop, and skiing. He enjoyed the family summer trips to Table Rock Lake with his children and later with all his grandchildren. He also enjoyed dancing well into his 90's at the American Legion Post 400. He loved country western music.
He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia; his 2 sisters and 1 brother; a granddaughter, Abbey Jordan; his beloved son-in-law, Donald Jordan; and both his parents.
Robert is survived by his son, David and daughter-in-law Jane; two daughters, Claudia Mitchell and Joanie Jordan; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
