Robert M. "Bob" Child, Sr., 77, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009.
He was born June 8, 1931 in Elmont, KS, the son of Douglas C. and Florence L. (Peters) Child. He was a graduate from Seaman High School. He served in the United States Army 300th Artillery Unit in the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, retiring after 45 years.
Mr. Child was a member of the Rubber Workers Union Local No. 307.
Robert married Betty D. Deitrick on August 27, 1949 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on April 16, 1995. Survivors include a son, Robert Child, Jr. (Jodi) of Topeka; his daughter, Janelle Gibbon (Harold) of Derby, KS; two sisters; M. Blanche Child and M. Grace Miller both of Topeka; 9 grandchildren, Harold Robert, Joseph, Crystal, Scott, John, Kelly, and Carol Gibbon, and Dillon and Lacey Child. He was preceded in death by a brother Douglas C. "Bud" Child, Jr.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Mon., Feb. 23, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka. Interment will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery, Topeka. Mr. Child will lie instate after 3 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Rd, Topeka, KS 66617.
