Robert L. Scheetz

October 24, 1922 — February 5, 2014

Robert "Bob" L. Scheetz, 91 passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at a local hospital.

Bob was born on October 24, 1922 in Richland, Kansas, the middle of three sons, to August and Velma McDowell Scheetz.

He was a partner in Scheetz Poultry Farm for most of his life. After the business closed, he worked for the State of Kansas, Highway Patrol - mainly at security desks in the Kansas Statehouse and the Judicial Building - until his retirement.

Bob was a great gardener who grew wonderful corn, tomatoes and watermelons. He enjoyed coaching baseball and playing church-league softball. As his children grew older, he continued his interest in sports by attending as many Kansas State Women's Basketball games as he could with his son, Larry.

He was a social person, participating in numerous activities and organizations. He was a 4-H leader, belonged to the Sunrise Optimist Club, and square-danced with a local group at Croco Square. He played cards at local community centers, and played pitch, pinochle and cribbage whenever offered the chance. Towards the end of his life, he enjoyed singing with the New Beginnings Choir.

Bob married Verna McMurray in 1947, and had five children. They later divorced. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Scheetz-Freymiller and husband Rick, Anchorage, AK, Carol Scheetz and husband, Ron Compton, Topeka, and Catherine Hartzell and husband, Allen, Phoenix, AZ; sons, Dennis R. Scheetz and wife, Margaret, Portland, ME, and Larry L. Scheetz, Topeka; 6 grandchildren (Elizabeth, Jeffery, Andrew, Hana, Caitlon, Zachary); 2 step-grandchildren (Alyssa, Ashlie); and 6 great-grandchildren (Jordan, Jacob, Gabby, AJ, Izaak, River). He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Richard and Kenneth.
