Robert L. "Bob" Kessler, 90, of Topeka, passed away March 7, 2009.
Bob was born March 3, 1919 in LaPorte, IN to Charles F. and Emma (Dorn) Kessler. He wed Oline Harman on July 25, 1942 in Chicago, IL. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, having entered active service August 28, 1942. He served for 18 months, 1943-44, in the Pacific Theater as a Medical Aidman and later as a Message Center Clerk. Also during this time, Bob participated in the liberation of the Philippine Islands and Northern Solomons. He received the following decorations and medals: Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, and Philippine Liberation Medal. He was honorably discharged on October 12, 1945. Bob has been a resident of Topeka since 1952, having lived in both Chicago, IL and Dallas, TX. He retired after 32 years of service as Lens Dept. Manager from Duffens Optical Co. in 1985. Bob was a 57-year member of Northland Christian Church (formerly Central Ave. Christian Church) where he was an active member of the church choir and a past board member. Bob was a member of AARP Chapter 2367, Active Primetimers (Mature Outlook), and VFW, Philip Billard Post #1650.
Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Oline, his three sons, John (Barbara) of Topeka, Charles (Noreen) of Bridgeport, CT, and Thomas of Ocala, FL, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Bob is preceded in death by both his parents, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.
Mr. Kessler will lie in state after 3:00 pm, Thursday, March 12th, with visitation to follow from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 13th, 1:00 pm, at Northland Christian Church. Additional calling hours will be at the church on Friday from 11:30 until 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Northland Christian Church, Choir Fund, or Topeka Rescue Mission.
