OBITUARY: Robert James Smith
Robert James Smith, 80, Ozawkie, died at his home of Alzheimers on Sunday, May 13, 2007. He was born Oct. 22, 1926, at Onaga, the youngest of 5 children born to Bertrand Guy and Eunice Oliva (Truitt) Smith. Bob attended Onaga public schools and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He lived in Oskaloosa from 1952 to 1979. He worked at Luster Motors in Oskaloosa and Burkhart Battery & Electric in Topeka. In Oskaloosa he owned and operated Smith Motor Service and Standard Station in the former Luster Motor Building and later purchased the Sinclair Station operated as Smith Service. He was Chief of the Oskaloosa Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He moved to Ottawa in 1979, and with his son owned and operated B & G Auto Supply Co. for 7 years before retiring. He moved to Ozawkie in 2000. Bob was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Ottawa and attended the Rock Creek Bible Church.
Bob was married to Charlotte Nadine Coltharp on Jan. 24, 1947, at Olathe. She survives.
Also surviving are children: Teresa A. "Terry" and Jerry Wofford of Lenexa, Gordon Robert and Mary Lou Smith of Ozawkie, Loretta R. and Jeff Hurst of Topeka, and Edgar Warren Smith and Gloria of Dodge City; siblings: Gail Falk of Des Moines, IA, Hazel Richards of Bardstown, KY, Edgar Walton "Bus" Smith of Limon, CO, and Betty Eisenbarth of Onaga; grandchildren: Christopher B. and Stephanie Wofford, DeAndra D. Smith, Tyece M. Wofford, Quentin A. and Ilene Hurst, Jay Robert and Cortni Hurst; and Sarah Jane and Daniel Duckworth; and great-grandchildren: Haley Wofford, Garrhett Hurst, Cameron Wofford, Cecily Hurst, Julia Rivera, and Cole Wofford.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM, Thurs., May 17, 2007, at Pleasant View Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Bob will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Wednesday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
