Robert Allen "Bob" Runyan, Sr., 89, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
He was born October 7, 1924, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Tirey J. and Nettie L. (Van Horn) Runyan. He attended Seaman Schools.
Bob served as a medical detachment technician, Troop F of the 8th Cavalry in the U.S. Army, from 1943-1945, receiving 2 Bronze Star awards and the Purple Heart during his service in the Philippines. He managed a Super Oil Filling Station in Topeka. He retired from Wehner's IGA in 1989. He enjoyed the hardware business and continued to work part-time at Roach Hardware until the age of 83. Mr. Runyan was a member of the Northland Christian Church of Topeka.
Bob married Daisy E. Coffman on November 9, 1945 in Topeka. She survives of the home. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly J. (Leonard) Womack, Topeka; a son, Robert A. (Susan) Runyan Jr., Silver Lake; 12 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Patricia Ann Corber and Peggy Marie Womack; two grandsons, Jerry Womack, Jr. and Matthew Runyan; and four siblings, Edith Runyan, Edna Brown, Noma Finson and Jim Runyan.
His happiest times were spent with family, and he passed peacefully surrounded by those he loved. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, gardening and Jayhawk basketball.
A funeral ceremony with military honors will be at 11 a.m., Friday, December 27, 2013 at Northland Christian Church, 2102 NW Topeka Blvd, Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church. Private interment will be at the Silver Lake Cemetery, Silver Lake, KS. Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel is assisting the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert Runyan Sr. Memorial Fund in care of Envista Credit Union, Topeka, KS.
