Robert G. "Bob" Allen, 73, Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at his residence.
Bob was born March 4, 1933 in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Cecil R. and Mamie L. Allen. He grew up in the Kansas City and Lawrence areas.
He married Virginia Rose Smith on June 8, 1958 in the EUB/Methodist Church in Lecompton. After he married, they lived in Lecompton and Lawrence then moved to Topeka in 1968.
He served in the U.S. Army in Korea for two years. He was among the start-up crew at DuPont at Tecumseh and worked there for 9 years. He left there to help start up the Hydra-Tool plant in North Topeka. He worked for Hydra-Tool for 11 years becoming the Plant Manager. He later worked for 5 years at Seaman USD-345 as Maintenance Supervisor. He left there to start his own trucking business, hauling grain to elevators and retired in 1992 due to illness.
He was a member of Northland Christian Church. He was a licensed FCC Amateur Radio operator for many years. He enjoyed traveling and camping and was a member of the Go-For-Fun Camp Club. He and his wife spent several winters in southern Texas in the McAllen area.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Virginia; his daughter, Patricia I. Clark and her husband, James, Silver Lake; his son, Thomas G. Allen, Highlands Ranch, CO; his two granddaughters, Taylor and Jordan Allen, Highlands Ranch, CO; and his two step grandchildren, Lesli and Kasey Clark, Silver Lake. He is also survived by a sister, Betty L. Newell, Oskaloosa; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2007 at the Lecompton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Bob will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
