After successfully living with multiple sclerosis for more than two decades, Richard W. Pfortmiller, 73, Topeka, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2007, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center. Rich was born July 27, 1934 in Hays, Kansas, the son of Daniel and Thelma Pfortmiller.
He graduated from Hays High School and attended Fort Hays State University. He was employed by the State of Kansas Department of Transportation where he worked as an auditor until his retirement. Most recently he continued auditing part-time for JMA Chartered.
Rich loved camping and was a long time member of the National Hiking and Campers Association. He was a Boy Scouts of America leader in Hays and Topeka. He was an active council member and coordinator of the Multiple Sclerosis Bounce Back Group.
Rich married Janice L. VanLaeys in 1956. She survives. Other survivors include sons Wayne (wife Deb and grandsons, Alan and Dave) of Olathe, Kansas; Jim of Topeka; Tom (wife Joni and grandson J.W.) of Topeka; and many family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ken and Joe.
Memorial Services will be at 3 pm, Thursday, November 15, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka.
