Richard G. Gooden, 75, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 from complications of ALS.
He was born May 4, 1939 in Maple Hill, Kansas, the son of Charles Henry and Jeanette A. (Sweeney) Gooden. He attended Topeka High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army.
Richard was co-founder of Sunflower Dental Studio in Topeka in 1981. He owned and operated the studio until retiring in 2004.
He was a member of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church and American Legion Post No. 400 of North Topeka.
Richard married Shirley K. DeHart on September 23, 1961 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on January 19, 2013. He married Brenda Gonzalez on August 24, 2014 in Topeka. She survives at the home. Other survivors include two sons, Eric (Jenny) Gooden, Topeka, KS and Troy (Jill) Gooden, Topeka; a daughter, Denise (Steve) Koch, Centralia, KS; 11 grandchildren, J.T., Beau and Cole Gooden, Jayci and Tyler Gooden, Lukas, Malori, Levi, Maegan, Sarah and Derek Koch; three step- children, Nick (Dana) Gonzalez, Berryton, KS, Sally Gonzalez and Katrina Gonzalez, both of Topeka; six step-grandchildren, Nicole Gonzalez, Rachel Gonzalez, Victoria Gonzalez, Brandon (Desire) Ross, Maria (Chris) LaBlanc, Nick Tracy; a brother, Charles E. Gooden, Lawrence; and two sisters, Virginia Lett, Maple Hill, KS and Arlene Widner, Topeka, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Wanda Graybeal and Lois Schultes, two brothers, Orville and Eldon Gooden and an infant brother, William Gooden.
Richard was an avid K-State fan and enjoyed golf with his buddies, Rich, Travis and Steve.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Interment will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Maple Hill, KS. Richard will lie in state after 3 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m., Thursday.
