OBITUARY: Richard Eugene Goodwin



Richard Eugene Goodwin, 77, Topeka, died Mon., Jan. 19, 2009. He was born April 5, 1931, at Thayer, MO, the son of Ernest Blaine and Zelma Mae (Kerby) Goodwin. He served in the U.S. Navy for 8 years, and had worked for Whelan's for 36 years. Richard was a charter member of Lighthouse Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He had served as a deacon and trustee at East Side Baptist Church and Knollwood Baptist Church. He was married to Melba Mae Nicolay on Nov. 28, 1949, at Lawrence. She survives. Other survivors include 3 daughters: Jan Miller of Oklahoma City, OK, Lisa Annette Workman of Topeka, and Brenda Kay Swift of Topeka; 2 brothers: Harold E. "Gene" Pease of Bixby, OK and Raymond Goodwin of Springfield, MO; 2 sisters: Virginia Springfield of Thayer, MO and Carolyn Looney of West Plains, MO; 9 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Paul Goodwin. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Fri., Jan. 23, 2009, at East Side Baptist Church, 4425 SE 29th Street. A U.S. Navy Detail will conduct military honors at Highland Cemetery, Lyndon. Richard will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Thurs., at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church Building Fund, POB 4466, Topeka, KS 66604.
