Reverend E. Leon Parker

Reverend E. Leon Parker, 78, Topeka, Kansas, died Thursday, July 10, 2014, at his home. He was born October 10, 1935, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the son of Boyd and Marie (Dixon) Parker.

He graduated from Shawnee High School (Shawnee, OK), and Bethany Bible College (Dothan, AL). He was in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.

Leon was manager for TG&Y Variety Stores in Oklahoma City; worked for Acme Paint (Topeka), Kansas State Services for the Blind Business Enterprise Program, and Sutton Grocery Store's Baker. He pastored at Faith Baptist Church (Lawrence, KS), Mill Creek Baptist Church (McFarland, KS) and was founding pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, where he ministered for 20 years. After retiring from New Hope Baptist Church he served as pastor at First Baptist Church (Lyndon, KS). He was a former Topeka Police Department Chaplain (17 years). He recently was associated with PRN Hospice. He attended Covenant Baptist Church.

Leon was married to Beverly Smith on October 10, 1957, at Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Survivors include his wife: Beverly Parker of the home; children: Jody Greene (Jim) of St. Louis, MO, Doug Parker (Barbra) of Shawnee, OK, and Terry Parker(Veronica) of McFarland, KS; sister: Dema Nell Lee of Phoenix, AZ; brother: Melvin Parker of Norman, OK; ten grandchildren: Susan, Randy, Marli, Jesse, Alicia, Douglas, Caleb, Derek, Katie, and Spencer; and eighteen great-grandchildren: Peter, William, Addie, Jack, Abe, Allie, Alex, Alyssa, Annabelle, Dalen, Gavin, Danny, Lilly, Josie, Oakley, Emerson, and two on the way.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Topeka Bible Church Fellowship Center, 1101 SW Mulvane, Topeka, Kansas. Military Honors will be conducted at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth, Topeka, Kansas.

Pastor Parker will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Monday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
