Reverend Dalec. Thomas

July 24, 1930 — November 28, 2013

Obituary: Rev. Dale C. Thomas

Dale was born on July 24, 1930, to Albert and Ina Thomas, in Sharon, Kansas. He went to be with the Lord on November 28, 2013. He married the love of his life, Helyn June Hart on August 29, 1948, in Medicine Lodge, KS. She was waiting for him in Heaven.

He is survived by his son Bob Thomas (Candace), his daughter Jane Stewart (Mike), grandsons Mike Thomas (Debbie), Dirk Thomas, and their mother, Candy Thomas, Jason Shove (Jolene), granddaughters Kari Struemph (Micheal), Cher Baker (Jeff), numerous great grandchildren and 2 great-great granddaughters.

He graduated from Medicine Lodge High School. Before becoming a minister, he owned a farm and raised sheep in the Medicine Lodge area, built a house in town, and owned and ran a one-person grocery store. The family moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where he attended Manhattan Bible College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961. During this time, he preached weekends at the Christian Church in Barnes, Kansas. In 1961 Dale was called to Central Avenue Christian Church. As that church grew the congregation moved to the current location and starting building Northland Christian Church. Dale was senior pastor there for 31 years.

The family spent many fun-filled vacations and weekends camping, fishing and hunting together at local Kansas lakes and also in Colorado. The annual trip to Gunnison, Colorado, to visit relatives (and catch a lot of trout) was a highlight of the summer for many, many years.

An enthusiastic fan of flying, he first started as a young boy with wire-controlled models, then, as an adult, he became a small plane pilot and made many trips with his family to and from Medicine Lodge to visit his family. He even ventured into radio-controlled models in his retirement years.

His primary hobbies were hunting and fishing. He started as a young boy and continued both until his mid 70's. Among his biggest fish were an 8 foot Pacific Sailfish and a 30 pound King Salmon, which he got on trips with Jane and Mike. His favorite deer trophy was a nice Mule deer buck he got while hunting in New Mexico with his son, Bob. He was famous among his friends for being a great wing shot, able to get 5 quail on a covey rise, a trick not many people can do.

He led 8 trips to the Holy Land, providing an opportunity for many dozens of people to share in his love and knowledge of the Bible and its locations.

After retiring he spent many years visiting retirement communities and singing. He was very joyful, and loved sharing his joy with others.

His last 2½ years were spent at Brookside Retirement Community where he received excellent care.

Services will be held at Northland Christian Church, 3102 N. Topeka Blvd., at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 3, 2013. The family will receive visitors at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence
