Reese H. Canaday
Reese H. Canaday, 80, Topeka, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at Midland Hospice. He was born July 27, 1923, in Centerville, the son of Louis Wood and Iva Belle Sheets Canaday. He was a marine during World War II, serving in several South Pacific Campaigns and was decorated for Valor at Iwo Jima, receiving the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Mr. Canaday was a pipefitter with Goodyear Tire Co. for 27 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Fairlawn Nazarene Church and Marine Corp League. His interests included hunting, fishing and piloting private aircraft. He married Thelma VanDyne on Jan. 18, 1948, in Independence. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Nancy Shoyer and husband, Phil, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sons, Ralph Canaday and wife, Margo, Oklahoma City, Okla., Russell Canaday and wife, Beverly, Independence, and John Canaday and wife, Sally, Golden, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and a sister, K. Gayle Kanara, Independence. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairlawn Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Canaday will lie in state at Parker-Price Mortuary from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Parker-Price Mortuary, and the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the church.
