Ralph Burgess was born April 10, 1916 in Ottawa, Canada to Vena and Victor Burgess. Victor passed away when Ralph was young and Vena married Alva (Babe) Trueblood. The family, Vena, Babe, Ralph, his brothers, Lloyd and Charles; his sisters, Tillie and Dorothy moved to the Harveyville, Kansas area around 1931.
Ralph married Doris Irene Dennison on July 31, 1941, and went into the Army in 1942. He returned in 1945 and worked at the Santa Fe Railroad for a short time and then Kansas Power &Light Company. He retired from KPL as a foreman in 1972.
Ralph and Doris bought and operated Green Acres Residential Care Facility in Fredonia, Kansas until 1984, when they retired to Topeka, Kansas.
Ralph and Doris had 5 children, Albert (Eugene), Connie, Ralph Edward (Eddie), Kathy and Larry.
Ralph was preceded in death by Eugene, Doris and Eddie. He leaves Connie and her husband, Steve Kessler, Topeka, KS, Kathy and her husband, Patrick Johnston, Parsons, KS and Larry and his wife Teresa, Fredonia, KS, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Ralph passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2015 surrounded by his family after 99 wonderful years.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 8, 2015, at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, 820 SW Auburn Road, Topeka. A Fort Riley Army Detail will conduct military honors.
Ralph will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Thursday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.
