Phyllis M. Stroud

June 27, 1934 — December 9, 2019

Phyllis, "Phyl" M. Stroud, 85, passed away on December 9, 2019 in Topeka.

Phyl was born in Humboldt, Kansas on June 27, 1934, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Collison) Moore. Following Phyl's graduation from Humboldt High School, she received her bachelor's degree in music and education from Emporia State University. Phyl married Gary Stroud on May 27, 1956. The love of their lives, Bradley J. Stroud was born on April 23, 1957.

Phyl, or "Mrs. Stroud", first taught elementary school music before teaching many fourth graders at Rochester Elementary School. After her retirement from the Seaman District, Phyl enjoyed working at the Kansas Legislature.

Phyl was an active person. She loved gardening, hiking the mountains of Colorado, bicycling their tandem bicycle in and around Topeka, and taking tap dancing and aerobics classes. Phyl was an avid Jazz music fan and attended many Jazz concerts including Gary's group, The Kings of Swing. She was a member of the Topeka Jazz Workshop, Delta Zeta Sorority, and was devoted to attending the weekly vesper service at Brewster Place.

Any one who knew Phyl knew she was a "class act" and of course, a gracious hostess. Phyl was a great cook and she shared many wonderful meals with friends, both at their home on 39th street or their summer cabin in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado. Phyl was always ready to share her recipes with the many people who enjoyed her food.

Despite Phyl and Gary's health difficulties over the years, and the loss of their dear son Brad, Phyl always persevered and remained strong and determined. Phyl was a dear friend to many. She will be deeply missed and remembered for her great capacity to love, care and give selflessly to others. She was admired as being a person of great integrity and character.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Gary; niece, Jan Duerksen; nephew, Fred Moore; and many dear friends and former students who loved Mrs. Stroud. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Bradley Stroud; sister, Verna Devine; and brother, Gene Moore.

Phyl was a very genuine person with great humility. She never wanted to be in the limelight. She was the tap dancer who chose not to perform. At Brewster Place, where Gary and Phyl have lived the last four plus years, Phyl liked to joke, "Gary is #1, and I'm #2." It was just the way she liked it. It is likely for those reasons that Phyl specified in her wishes to not have a memorial service. Also following her wishes cremation has taken place.
