OBITUARY: Phyllis K. Rogers
Phyllis Kathryn Rogers, 91, Topeka, KS, died Monday, May 14, 2012. She was born June 28, 1920, in Lexington, NE, the daughter of Thomas P. and Anna J. (Sleicher) Crawford.
Phyllis received an Associate of Arts Degree in American Literature from North Park Junior College, Chicago, IL; a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature from the University of Chicago; and a Bachelor of Music Degree from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. She also attended the Biblical Seminary of New York City after which she did mission work teaching school in Truchas, NM, for 8 years.
She lived in Aurora, IL, before moving to Topeka in 1967. Phyllis was a member of Oakland Presbyterian Church where she was music director for over 35 years. She also played the organ for services at the Topeka Presbyterian Manor and Atria Hearthstone.
Phyllis was married to Rev. Donald W. Rogers on Aug. 21, 1954, in Chicago, IL. He preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 2011. Surviving are two daughters: Donna K. Casey and Cheryl E. Rogers both of Topeka; two granddaughters: Kirsten R. Casey of Shawnee and Alyssa D. Casey of Topeka; a great-granddaughter: Ava K. Starforth of Shawnee; and a niece: Julie Crawford Hansen of Mt. Prospect, IL.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Sat., May 19, 2012, at Oakland Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Topeka Cemetery. Phyllis will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Fri., at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
